Sheffield Live! is a  is an independent radio station. They are owned by Commedia Sheffield Ltd, this is run by Sangita Basudev. This means that is isn't owned by any other company, so therefore it isn't a subsidiary, this means that it operates in a different way. Commercial main stream radio stations use adverts for popular products which target an ABC1 audience to make money through advertising. This means they will make a profit. Community radio stations do have adverts so they are making some money in order to stay running however their objective is to provide content for the community and therefore representing the different people within the community. Community radio stations are not allowed by their remit to make a profit of their radio. Ofcom awarded Sheffield Live! a license, the station has to follow the broadcasting act (1990) and the community radio order (2004) otherwise they may get their broadcasting license taken off of them. Sheffield Live! can only run if they do not cross over with commercial radio stations or the BBC. This means that they have to be completely different and not operate in the same way. This means that they cannot make profit. The regulations state that community radio stations cannot gain more than 50% of their running cost from adverts and sponsorships. The other 50% that is needed for funding must come from public funding via grants, donor income, Friends of Sheffield Live, national lottery funding or charities. Another way which they can get money is through the community radio fund which they get annually from Ofcom, this is a grant. In 2009, they used the £15,000 community radio fund in order to fund the wage of Sangita. The music that Sheffield Live! play is very niche and diverse, some of the music they play includes jungle, Asian pop and Latin. A large proportion of the music is in a different language. A large proportion of the actual shows are in English however some other shows are in different community languages. The weekly audience reach is 11% which means that 32,000 adults tune in every week. This means that Sheffield Live! is successful as out of a reach of 50,000 which most community radio stations can reach. According to Ofcom (2001), the aim of a station is for social gain meaning that they have content for different people of all cultures and backgrounds in the local area. Community radio stations must operate for the good of the public, and must provide community benefit or what is termed social gain. On stations like Heart, the DJ's are paid professionals where as Sheffield Live! relies on volunteers which therefore gives them a platform. In order to listen to Sheffield Live! you can listen live on 93.2fm, as a podcast or online.

Comparison of different stations

Radio X and Heart are very similar stations, this could be due to them both being subsidiary companies under the Global conglomerate. Both of these stations feature adverts that may be similar due to Global but will vary as the target audience for the two ratio stations vary. Radio X has a younger audience of majority males however Heart is aimed at women of a slightly older audience, however there is some overlap between the two in age. The adverts may also have some similarities as both audiences belong to an ABC1 social class, this means that they have more money to spend so the adverts may contain products or services that may be more luxury. Also due to these two stations being part of the same conglomerate, the way in which you can listen to both the programmes is very similar. This could be due to Global making sure that both the stations are easily accessible on every type of device. BBC Radio 4 is different to Radio X and Heart as it is not a part of the same conglomerate and it is also a public service broadcaster which the other stations are not. This means that the BBC receive funding by the government, but their programmes have to inform, entertain and educate.
